I can't begin to think of how many times I got a good tip, a free ride, a place to stay, or other useful things in Europe just because I (or someone I was with) was willing to approach people. And as you point out, it works back home too. Just as a tip, in a foreign country, there's always a brotherhood of people from your neck of the woods. Picking out people who look American or otherwise not from the country you are in is a good way to find people willing to help you out. Of course, karma works both ways. You have to be nice to people too. It never hurts to be courteous. It takes a lot of effort, but being outgoing in new places is definitely the way to go.
